David Ayer Discusses The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, Congratulates James Gunn

Suicide Squad director David Ayer took to social media on Thursday to share his perspective on the 2016 film, torching the studio in the process and claiming that his original cut of the film was far different than what the final product ended up being.

In a three-page letter sent out on Twitter, Ayer distanced himself from both Warner Bros.’ original cut of the film, and a “10 week director’s cut” that has also popped up, saying that he can’t take credit for either of them.

“I put my life into Suicide Squad. I made som4ething amazing – My cut is intricate and emotional journey with some “bad people” who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul),” Ayer said in his note. “The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again. And my cut is not the 10 week director’s cut – It’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the incredibly [sic] work by John Gilroy.

“It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid 3rd Act resolution. If someone says they have seen it, they haven’t.”

Ayer went on to say that regardless of what people say about him, he doesn’t have it in him to quit on anything. He also mentioned that while he never told his side of the story, he never will, because he’s “old school” and kept his mouth shut while waves of criticism came in against the film.

Ayer’s post came in response to a Tweet from another critic, who criticized the initial film while reviewing the latest film The Suicide Squad from James Gunn. Ayer ended things by saying that he was proud of James, and thrilled that the Suicide Squad franchise is getting the “legs it needs,” and that he’ll be rooting for everyone along the way.

Since posting the tweet, the hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut has begun trending once again.
