Movies on Blu-ray/DVD

Chaos Walking

Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by “The Noise” – a force that puts all their thoughts on display.

Happily

Starring Joel McHale and Kerry Bishé, this film features a happily married couple that are still all over each other after 14 years. “When they discover their friends are resentful of their constant public displays of affection, the couple starts to question the loyalty of everyone around them. Then, a visit from a mysterious stranger (Stephen Root) thrusts them into an existential crisis, leading to a dead body, a lot of questions, and a very tense couples’ vacation in this dark romantic comedy.”

Neo Heroic Fantasia Arion

An adaptation of the manga of the same name, Arion was originally released in 1986. Now the classic anime film is available on Blu-ray featuring English subtitles and several bonus features.

The Outpost

The director’s cut includes an additional scene. Based on a true story, the film stars Orlando Bloom and Scott Eastwood as members of a team of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

Criterion Corner

Nightmare Alley

This week’s Criterion release is Nightmare Alley, which is Edmund Goulding’s adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s best seller. It stars Tyrone Power as Stanton Carlisle, a carny that goes down “a path of moral degradation and self-destruction.” This 4K digital restoration includes the uncompressed soundtrack, audio commentary from film historians, several interviews, and an essay by Kim Morgan.

Book Club

Superman Vol. 4: Mythological

“This volume collects Superman #20-28, closing the book on Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis’s acclaimed Superman run, showing us the Metropolis Marvel tussling with a legendary foe while also creating new legends.”

Reissues

A Night at the Roxbury

The cult comedy favorite starring Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan is now on Blu-ray. The comedy sees the duo bringing their Butabi brothers from Saturday Night Live to a feature film.

The Birds 4K

Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film is now in 4K. The terrifying classic stars Melanie Daniels and Mitch Brenner as they’re attacked by birds.

Django 4K

The 1966 classic spaghetti western is now available in 4K. This definitive set features the film remastered, plus the film Texas, Adios, which was released as a sequel to Django in several countries. There’s also a collector’s edition if you want to really splurge.

The Final Countdown 4K

Featuring Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen, The Final Countdown is now in 4K. This sci-fi film revolves around an aircraft carrier that is hurled back in time to right before Pearl Harbor.

My Fair Lady

This Aubrey Hepburn classic has been restored in 4K from 8K scans of the original 65mm film. The 50th-anniversary edition celebrates the classic, which won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Psycho 4K

Another Alfred Hitchcock classic, this 1960 film reinvented the thriller. Watch as the Bates Motel is born and Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) terrifies.

Super 8 4K

J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg’s Super 8 is now available in 4K. The supernatural film was highly regarded by critics and comes with two hours of special features. Plus, there is a 10th anniversary limited edition Steelbook as well.

New On Digital HD

American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally

Based on a true story, this film is out May 28 and stars Al Pacino as a World War II-era lawyer that defends “Axis Sally,” an American that aided Germany by broadcasting propaganda during the war.

Cruella

Available on Disney Plus, this prequel shows the beginnings of the iconic Disney villainess.

The Unholy

Out on streaming, this Sami Raimi-produced film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan. In it, a woman accused of witchcraft is executed and her spirit is bound to a doll.

The Water Man

Starring David Oyelowo, Rosario Dawson, Lonnie Chavis, and Amiah Miller, this family film sees a young boy searching for the titular urban legend after his mother gets cancer.

Endangered Species

Out May 28, Endangered Species is “an intense, action-packed survival-adventure about a wealthy American family who travel to the vast African wilderness of Kenya hoping for a dream vacation filled with excitement, bonding, and a chance to fix the growing rifts within their family.”

TV on Blu-ray and DVD

Ace Attorney: The Complete First Season

Based upon the hit video game, this faithful adaptation brings the over-the-top court cases to the small screen. It includes episode commentary and features 24 episodes on four discs.

Ahiru No Sora: Seasons 3 & 4

The basketball anime features 25 episodes on 3 discs.

Baki Season 1

TMS Entertainment’s Baki, which is based on the popular manga, is now on Blu-ray. The three-disc set features all 26 episodes in the first season.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Set 09

The Naruto sequel series continues with the latest release, which includes an episode where Kakashi and Might Guy take a trip to the hot springs.

Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics Season 1

This Japanese cartoon found success in North America and features retellings of classic fairy tales. The English dub is also included and it includes two episodes that were never broadcasted in North America: Bluebeard and The Naughty Spirit. All 24 episodes are included.

Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl

This collection features all 13 episodes and the English dub as well. The background for the series is truly something else, so I’ll let the official summary explain:

“Hazumu was a shy boy who enjoyed gardening, collecting herbs, and long walks in the mountains. One day he finally worked up the courage to confess his love to Yasuna, but she rejected him. Feeling dejected, he wandered up Mt. Kashimayama to the place where they first met to reconsider his feelings. After getting lost, he wished upon a shooting star which turned out to actually be a crashing alien spaceship. Although he was hit by the falling ship, Hazumu survived the crash thanks to some body reconstruction by the aliens, only they got it a little wrong… Now that he is a she, Hazumu stumbles head-first back into his social life and relationships only to find that the entire landscape has changed.”

Magical Girl Ore

Another Discotek release, this anime series is a parody of the magical girl genre.

Medabots: The Complete 3rd Season

Discotek has put out all 39 episodes of the series’ third season on Blu-ray. It includes the English dub.

New Game!: Complete Series

Both seasons of this anime are now on Blu-ray. It features textless opening and closing songs.

Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle – Part One

The popular MMO received an anime adaptation, which is now on Blu-ray. 12 episodes are split across two discs.

Plunderer – Part One

The first 12 episodes of the hit anime series is now on Blu-ray. Special features include “Plunderer: A Conversation with Licht and Hina,” “Making Purin with Eric Vale and Sarah Wiedenheft,” and more.

Supernatural: The Fifteenth and Final Season

The final season of Supernatural is now on Blu-ray. Witness the end of the Winchester brothers’ story.

Ultraman Leo – Complete Series

The seventh entry in the first wave of the Ultra Series is now available on Blu-ray. Originally premiered in April 1974, this package features all 51 episodes of the Japanese show in high definition.
