Shazam 2 Reportedly Set to Film Later This Year

While many studios are facing production and release delays amidst global pandemic concerns, Warner Bros. and director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) are hoping to keep on track for the highly-anticipated Shazam 2 and enter production later this year, according to ComicBook.com.

In an interview with the website ahead of their Quarantine Watch Party, Sandberg revealed that he and his production teammates are finding new ways to continue developing and preparing the project until self-quarantining has finished across the country.

Well, we’ll see how long this goes, because I mean, we were going to start shooting this year,” Sandberg told ComicBook.com. “But, I mean, who knows how long this will go on? I mean, it feels like every movie gets delayed now, so we’ll see what happens with Shazam!. But so far, I’ve been working on the script. We can still do that, so that’s being done and then, yeah, we’ll just see in a couple of months how it looks, you know? Some of [the time] has been watching movies,” Sandberg says. “We have a little bit of work that we can do remotely, we have meetings via Zoom. I’ve never heard of that app before this happened, and now it’s all Zoom. Yeah, it’s not too weird for us. We’re indoors a bit more. I’m sitting down and learning new software and doing little tests, things like that.

It was reported back in April that screenwriter Henry Gayden had signed on to return to craft a sequel for the comedic superhero effort with director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) likely to return alongside producer Peter Safran, but the studios had yet to officially announce a sequel would begin development and move forward with everyone returning. While no production date has currently been set, Levi did estimate earlier this year that production would begin as early as 2020!

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Shazam!

While Shazam! was largely self-contained, it did open a few doors for a sequel. For example. Billy Batson probably won’t be the only hero in the next movie. The mid-credits scene also introduced a bizarre villain directly from the comic books.

There’s even an allusion to Black Adam early in the film, although not by name. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been attached to play Black Adam for years. However, the decision was made to leave Black Adam out of the Shazam! movie. Last April, Johnson reacted to the success of Shazam! on his Instagram account. He also indicated that the Black Adam solo movie may finally begin filming in a year or so.

Shazam 2 is currently slated for an April 1, 2022 release!
