New York Film Critics Circle Go for American Hustle

For a second year in a row, the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC), made up of New York-based print critics, were first out of the gate with their awards, meeting in person for their vote, which was heavily weighed towards David O. Russell’s American Hustle, awarding it top honors for Best Picture and Screenplay as well as awarding Jennifer Lawrence for her supporting role.

Steve McQueen received the group’s award for Best Director for his drama 12 Years a Slave, while the wealth was fairly spread otherwise. Cate Blanchett received Best Actress for her performance in the title role of Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Robert Redford was honored for his solo performance in J.C. Chandor’s All is Lost (Roadside Attractions), and Jared Leto got the Supporting Actor nod for his role as a transvestite in Dallas Buyers Club.

Ryan Coogler won his second “Best First Film” honor in two days for his drama Fruitvale Station.

Best Non-Fiction Film went to Sarah Polley’s personal doc Stories We Tell, while Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises won for Best Animated Film and the French drama Blue is the Warmest Color was honored as the Best Foreign Language film.

Monday night’s Gotham Award winner Inside Llewyn Davis wasn’t completely ignored as its cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel received that award.

Tomorrow, the National Board of Review (NBR) will cast their votes, continuing the first full week of awards season.
