Secret Life of Pets 2 Debuts At #1, Dark Phoenix Flies to Franchise Low

Universal Pictures and llumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 opened at the #1 spot at the North American box office with an estimated $47.11 million, marking the ninth No. 1 opening for Illumination. The film brought in another $49 million internationally for a global total of $97.04 million and counting. This marks a significant drop from the first Secret Life of Pets, which opened with $104.3 in July of 2016, but the two movie franchise will cross the $1 billion mark as a pair in the coming days.

The final Fox X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, had the worst domestic opening of the franchise and marked the first time ever that an X-Men movie didn’t open in the #1 position in the US, bringing in a paltry $33 million. Internationally the film fared slightly better, debuting with $107 million for a global opening of $140 million (eclipsing Secret Life of Pets 2 worldwide).

Disney’s Aladdin slipped from second to third place, dipping just 42% and bringing in $24.5 million domestically and $67.6 million internationally for a global weekend haul of $92.1 million. In the US the film now sits at $232.4 million with an international total of $372.5 million and a global total of $604.9 million.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters fell hard, dropping 67.5% from last weekend and landing in fourth place from first. The film brought in $15.4 million domestically but continued the MonsterVerse tradition of raking in the dough overseas, bringing in $47.1 million in 78 international markets and giving it an international total of $213.7 million. The worldwide total now stands at $292.3 million. Godzilla will need a little help from his friends to match the 2014 film’s worldwide total of $529.1 million and Kong: Skull Island‘s $566.7 million.

Paramount’s Elton John biopic Rocketman fell to fifth place but dropped just 45.6% and added another $14 million for a domestic total of $50.49 million. Internationally the film brought in $13 million for an international total of $51.3 million and a global total of $101.79 million.
