Glass Breaks the Box Office Open with $40 Million Haul

They called him Mr. Glass, but M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable/Split follow-up was anything but fragile this weekend. Universal Pictures reports that Glass brought in $40.6 million domestically, putting it on par with 2017’s Split. The film added another $48.5 million internationally for a global debut of $89.1 million, making it the #1 movie in the world for the weekend. Bruce Willis return as David Dunn in the film starring alongside James McAvoy, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Spencer Treat Clark, and Charlayne Woodard. M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed the film.

STXfilms and Lantern Entertainment’s The Upside slipped to second place for the weekend, dropping just 23% from last weekend and bringing in another $15.67 million. The film has now brought in $43.98 million domestically. The Upside has also grossed $4.1 million internationally for a global total of $48 million. Directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless), The Upside stars Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston, and Nicole Kidman and is a remake of the 2011 box office hit French film Les Intouchables.

The surprise of the weekend is Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the latest feature film in the long running anime franchise, which opened in third place with $10.65 million for the weekend. Released by FUNimation Films on Wednesday, January 16, the film has brought in $24.9 million total at the domestic box office so far.

Warner Bros.’ Aquaman fell to fourth place for the weekend, but officially crossed the $300 million mark at the domestic box office. The latest chapter in the DCEU brought in $10.3 million for the weekend, giving it a domestic total of $307 million. Internationally the movie added another $14.3 million giving it an international total of $759.1 million and a global total of $1.06 billion. Aquaman has now passed Man of Steel at the domestic box office (which concluded its 2013 theatrical run with $291 million) and is now gunning for Suicide Squad (which concluded with $325 million). Worldwide the film is inching closer to The Dark Knight Rises‘ $1.084 billion global total, which would then make it the highest grossing DC movie of all time. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman.

Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse fell into fifth place, adding another $7.255 million to its total and bringing its domestic haul to $158.25 million. Internationally the film took in $4.7 million in 65 markets for an overseas total $164.6 million and giving it a global total of $322.85 million. Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Verse features the voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoë Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn with Nicolas Cage, Kathryn Hahn and Liev Schreiber.

Columbia Pictures/Bona Film Group’s family film A Dog’s Way Home fell to sixth place with a weekend total of $7.11 million, giving it a domestic total of $21.278 million. Directed by Charles Martin Smith, the screenplay is by W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon based on the book by W. Bruce Cameron. The film stars Ashley Judd, Jonah Hauer-King, Edward James Olmos and Alexandra Shipp with Wes Studi and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Sony Pictures’ Escape Room slipped to seventh place, adding another $5.275 million for a domestic total of $40.7 million. Internationally the film added another $9.5 million n 16 markets for an international total of $13 million and a global total of $53.7 million. Produced on a reported budget of $9 million, the horror-thriller is a runaway hit for the studio and will likely see a sequel enter development soon. Directed by Adam Robitel, Escape Room stars Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine and Nik Dodani with Yorick van Wageningen.

Walt Disney Studios’ Mary Poppins Returns slipped to eighth place, bringing in $5.2 million and making its domestic total $158.7 million. The sequel added $6 million internationally for an international total of $147.3 million and a global total of $306 million. The cast of Mary Poppins Returns includes Emily Blunt, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters, with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. Dick Van Dyke also returns for the film, directed by Rob Marshall.
