The official Avengers: Doomsday trailer is out now. It promises the exciting return of Marvel vets from the Avengers and X-Men franchises, teasing another massive crossover. However, I think one returning star’s highly anticipated appearance lacks the impact that it was supposed to make.
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with Stephen McFeely writing the screenplay. The latest installment will feature Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Lewis Pullman, Simu Liu, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Danny Ramirez. They will be joined by X-Men stars Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and more. The film will arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
Why Chris Evans’ Avengers: Doomsday return is underwhelming
Watching the trailer, I felt underwhelmed by Evans’ return as Steve Rogers. I believe that the video didn’t do a good job of showing the significance of his character’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Even though Steve Rogers’ appearance in the trailer was meant to be one of its highlights, it didn’t feel like it. Instead, fans were treated to a familiar moment between Hemsworth’s Thor and Evans’ Steve Rogers, which references an iconic scene from Avengers: Endgame.
The reason why Evans’ Avengers: Doomsday return isn’t as impactful as before is because the element of surprise has already been taken away from fans. Officially announcing Evans’ return wasn’t a good idea, especially for fans who want something different from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio should’ve kept his involvement a secret until the movie’s release, which would have gotten genuinely fun reactions from fans. Another reason why I think some fans aren’t as enthusiastic for Evans’ return as before is that he already made his MCU return in a cameo role in Deadpool & Wolverine. Even though he technically didn’t play the same character, I believe that his unexpected appearance in the 2024 movie has already satisfied some fans who missed seeing him in superhero films. And with all the new characters in the next Avengers film, fans won’t need to pay much attention to Steve Rogers.
