Avengers: Doomsday‘s first trailer is officially out. In the newest look at the movie, Marvel seems to be undoing some of its worst mistakes in how its handled Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.
“Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
Doomsday’s first official trailer isn’t the first time we’ve seen Hemsworth’s Thor make a return to the MCU. We saw him briefly in a teaser trailer for the film months ago. In that, he talks about how he’s trying to improve himself and be a better father in the face of an impending war of sorts. In the trailer, this is also expanded on.
Thor spends most of Doomsday’s trailer warning what looks to be a ragtag group of Avengers about the threat of Doctor Doom, saying that he’s fought with braver heroes who couldn’t come out on top of past enemies. In it, he also seems to be finally more like himself than in past movies.

While it doesn’t show off exactly what Thor will be like, it does look like Doomsday is bringing the character back into our standard vision of him. Throughout the MCU’s history, perhaps no hero has gone through more iterations and stylistic changes than Thor. In his first two films, Hemsworth played the character as a rigid, strait-laced God who had no time for anything that wasn’t battles or glory.
When Taika Waititi got into the fold with Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, the character turned into a softer, more comedic character, who still retained his traditional powers and love of battle, but was much more prone to throwing a joke or two around. Thor’s portrayal in Ragnarok seemed to be a perfect balance for many audiences. However, 2022’s Love and Thunder jumped the shark a bit.
The movie took what was an otherwise extremely serious and somber comic arc and turned it into a more comedic affair. Thor spends a lot of the movie’s runtime joking around and coming to terms with being a dad. The style clash was immediately apparent, especially after Thor had become essentially the butt of all of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame’s jokes when the character was shown to have gained weight. After his heroic moments in Endgame, many assumed we’d be on track for a return to form from Thor, only to have that not happen.
This time around, though, it seems to. Doomsday’s only given us a small taste of the film, but Thor looks much more like the character we know him for than ever. There still can be jokes and laughs, but for a movie about battling Doctor Doom for the fate of the multiverse, we’ll need to see a serious side of the God of Thunder.
