October Horror Movie Recommendation: Green Room

Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…..

Green Room (2015)

What’s Green Room about: Things go from bad to worse when touring punk band The Ain’t Rights (Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Callum Turner) discovers that they’re performing at a neo-Nazi-infested bar. Filled with anger at their inability to succeed in the industry (and hatred for the scum that surrounds the stage), the group decides to tick off the whole bar off by playing some incendiary music. Afterward, they happen to witness a horrific act of violence—not wanting any witnesses (and glad to get back at them for their performance), Darcy (Patrick Stewart) and his neo-Nazi klan keep The Ain’t Rights hostage.

Why Green Room rules: Despite only having four features under his belt, Jeremy Saulnier is one of the strongest and most innovative new voices in the horror-thriller genre today. Not to mention, with Nazi punks more relevant than ever right now, Green Room is a masterclass on what to do when neo-Nazi skinheads capture you and your punk band in the middle of the Pacific Northwest. The late Anton Yelchin is a powerhouse.

How scary is Green Room: The scariest part of Green Room is how, just four measly years ago, the idea of a bar full of murderous, angry neo-Nazis was kind of ridiculous but now feels pretty accurate. That, plus all the gore.

Be on the lookout for: Given its theme and grit, keep your eyes peeled for references to such horror-thrillers as Assault on Precinct 13 and Straw Dogs.

Where to watch Green Room: Green Room is on Netflix, but it’s also available on Blu-ray by clicking here.
