October Horror Movie Recommendation: Cat People

Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…..

Cat People (1982)

What’s Cat People about: Based (very, very loosely) on the 1942 horror film of the same name, Paul Schrader’s Cat People follows a young woman on the verge of a sexual awakening. In town to meet her older brother Paul (Malcolm McDowell) for the first time, Irene (Nastassja Kinski) finds herself alone in New Orleans after Paul’s disappearance—you see, the two come from a long line of Cat People who turn into ravenous panthers whenever they engage in any sort of sexual activity. Irena works to uncover the secrets of her past while trying to locate her brother, all while trying her damndest not to turn into a panther and murder anyone.

Why Cat People rules: Schrader’s take on Jacques Tourneur’s iconic horror film is a total fever dream. It’s over-the-top 80s cheese in the best possible way, full of all kinds of promiscuity and gore, making you wish that Schrader could take some other classics for a spin just for the hell of it.

How scary is Cat People: Cat People isn’t a horror film in the traditional sense (unless you’re bothered by blood). Like the films of David Cronenberg, Cat People is body horror—the scares come from the thought of the human body being capable of something so horrific.

Be on the lookout for: Twin Peaks standout Ray Wise has a quick little cameo, while Arrested Development and Christopher Guest alum Ed Begley Jr. fills a supporting role as Joe.

Where to watch Cat People: You can rent Cat People for $3.99 on Amazon Prime Video, or purchase the Scream Factory Blu-ray by clicking here!
