George Romero’s Empire of the Dead Comic Heads to TV

George A. Romero’s Empire of the Dead, a Marvel-published comic series which takes the contemporary zombie—that which Romero effectively created in 1968’s Night of the Living Dead—and pits it against vampires is being developed as a television project.

Variety reports Demarest, which recently produced Kevin Smith’s man-made-walrus horror, Tusk is backing Empire of the Dead. The limited series, which will run for 15 issues began in January 2014 and finishes up this August. Empire sees Romero continue to evolve his undead, as the zombies are gaining intelligence, as well as struggling with the vampires.

Empire of the Dead will be written by Romero and producer Peter Grunwald, and executive produced by Romero and Grunwald with Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson.
