Writer Tapped For Underworld 4

But will Beckinsale return?

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog reports that John Hlavin (who worked on FX’s The Shield) has been hired to write the script for Underworld 4 for Screen Gems/Lakeshore Entertainment.

Here are the facts we know – Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the vampire-vs.-werewolf saga, is producing with Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright of Lakeshore. No director is attached as of yet.

Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the first two movies, has not cut a deal to return to the series. However, she did say “I think if they came up with an amazing script I wouldn’t be adverse to it,” in our previous news story here.

No word on if Rhona Mitra, who fronted the third film, a prequel will return either.

While details are being kept secret, Hlavin did say, “I can tell you it’s not a prequel. It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements.”

We reported here that the studio was interested in carrying on Selene’s next arc through three more films. Screen Gems has Underworld 4 (in 3-D) penciled in for a January 21, 2011 release.
