Eisner: Creature Remake Waits on Wolfman

Could it be in 3-D?

The Creature from the Black Lagoon remake continues to tread water at Universal Pictures. How much longer can he stay afloat before it sinks back into development hell, however?

On the set of his latest production, a remake of George Romero’s The Crazies, director Breck Eisner – who has been in development on a Creature redo for nearly two years – told visiting press members, “We turned in another script there. I think they’re probably going to see how The Wolfman does and then I think we’ll know from there.” That’s just his guess.

As Eisner told us exclusively here last May, the creature design is done. Spectral Motion will handle the Gill Man’s creation. He maintains that, should the film come to fruition, the FX will be a combination of CG and practical. Much of the Gill Man’s underwater swimming will be done using the former technique. “Some of the movements of the Creature can’t be emulated by a guy in the suit.”

Asked if he’s considered doing the remake in 3-D, Eisner says, “We weren’t before, but the landscape in the last year has changed. People have forgotten the original is, they’ll remember it once the next one comes out.”
