Producer Talks Dark Horse, Universal’s R.I.P.D.

Adapted by Clash of the Titans scribes

At last night’s Hollywood launch party for the Hellboy II: The Golden Army DVD, producer Mike Richardson updated us on a number of projects Dark Horse Entertainment has stewing.

“We have a slate we’re announcing very shortly [with Univeral] but we’re doing R.I.P.D. over there with David Dobkin directing and a great script by [Matt] Manfredi and [Phil] Hay,” Richardson says. “He’s worked with them for a very long time to get the script just the way he wanted it. We’re getting very close and out to cast right now. There will be some announcements shortly.”

Dobkin previously helmed Fred Claus and The Wedding Crashers; Mandfredi and Hay recently co-wrote Louis Leterrier’s upcoming Clash of the Titans and are at work on an adaptation of The Boys for Columbia Pictures. The trio represent a fusion of comedy and action, something Richardson says R.I.P.D. will carry with a dose of frights. “It is going to have genuine scares, but there’s going to be a lot of humor in it. It’s about dead cops who come back and who can’t really be hurt, but there is a lot of fun situations. In this, there’s a real dark side to it. There’s a real sense of danger [to our heroes].”

Published in 2003, Peter Lenkov’s R.I.P.D. (the “Rest in Peace Department” – get it?) began as a comic book and focused on Nick Cruz, a murdered cop seeking his killer while doing 100 years of service in a divine branch of law enforcement.
