Euphoria, one of HBO‘s biggest shows, recently ended its run with Season 3, sparking speculation about the show’s future. Fans, surprised by the news, have been wondering whether it got canceled and why it is ending. Unlike the previous two installments, the third garnered a more mixed-to-negative reception, with criticism aimed at the characterization and narrative choices, among other elements.
Did Euphoria get canceled after Season 3?
Euphoria likely wasn’t canceled. This is because of its status as one of HBO’s most prominent series. Instead, the creatives decided to wrap up the story.
In a recent appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast, Sam Levinson, who created the show, shared that Season 3 was the natural concluding chapter to the story he set out to tell. He even wondered whether anything more could be explored after the interviewer asked him about the same.
Even series lead Zendaya believed Season 3 to be the final one. She said as much in an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in April, teasing, “Closure is coming.”
Why is Euphoria ending after just 3 seasons?
There are multiple possible factors as to why Euphoria ended after running for just three seasons.
One could be the growth of the main cast members during the four-year gap between the sophomore and final installments. Moreover, several of them, like Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and Zendaya, had grown in stardom during that time. They secured roles in multiple films while looking for opportunities to expand their credits, facing packed schedules as a result. Notably, as per Variety, this was reportedly one of the reasons Season 3 was delayed multiple times before its eventual release.
Another probable reason is the show’s decision to kill off some major characters towards the end. For instance, Elordi’s Nate Jacobs died in the penultimate episode from a rattlesnake bite after Naz and his gang buried him alive due to unpaid debts. Meanwhile, the finale saw Alamo kill Zendaya’s Rue Bennett by giving her Percocet pills secretly laced with fentanyl, which she overdosed on.
All eight episodes of Euphoria Season 3 are currently streaming on HBO Max. Aside from Zendaya, Elordi, Schafer, and Sweeney, the show stars Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Martha Kelly, Chloe Cherry, Toby Wallace, and the late Eric Dane.
