Having grown up with gang leaders on both sides of the split and living in the harsh Trenchtown district of Kingstown, Marley was no stranger to the street violence prevalent in Jamaica. Both the PNP and the JLP sought his support because he was the most famous inhabitant of Jamaica; nonetheless, he was wary of the political system as a whole and understood the risks involved in picking a side.
In hopes of defusing the tensions between the two rival factions, Marley planned to headline the Smile Jamaica concert. The film explores a number of conspiracy theories around the occurrence.
