Monarch Legacy of Monsters Canon

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters: Is the Apple TV Show Canon to the MonsterVerse?

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been thrilling Apple TV subscribers. But many Godzilla fans wish to know if the series is canon to the MonsterVerse, or if it is connected to Godzilla Minus One. Here’s all you need to know about its setting and franchise connections.

Is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters canon and part of the MonsterVerse?

Yes, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is canon to the MonsterVerse that began with Godzilla (2014).

As for the latest Japanese movie, Godzilla Minus One, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters shares no relation to it and instead expands Legendary’s MonsterVerse beyond Godzilla and Kong. Taking place in multiple eras across several years between 1952 and 2015, it also introduces new Kaiju monsters that haven’t been seen before.

As for its placement in the MonsterVerse, it touches on the events of both Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla (2014). But at the same time, it also acts as a prequel to Skull Island, placing a few events in the 1950s, and a sequel to Godzilla, featuring part of its story in 2015.

Here’s how the Monarch series is placed in the MonsterVerse timeline:

  • Kong: Skull Island (2017) – 1973
  • Godzilla (2014) – 2014
  • Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023) – Set partially before Kong Skull: Island in the 50s and partially after Godzilla in 2015.
  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) – 2019
  • Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) – 2024
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – Year yet to be confirmed

Considering that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been released in the build-up to the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it’s possible that the show will provide us with a story setup for the film. We might get a tease for the new villain Skar King, the current ruler of Hollow Earth.
