Is the Only Murders in the Building a real place?
“The Arconia” in Only Murders in the Building is a real building. However, in real life it is called “The Belnord.” The series was shot on location in New York City’s Belnord apartment complex.
Fictionally renamed The Acronia in the show, it has a rich history and was built by the architectural firm Hiss and Weekes in 1908. Consisting of 13 floors, the Italian Renaissance-style building is located at 86th and Broadway on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
In an interview with House Beautiful, the co-creator of Only Murders in the Building, John Hoffman, revealed why the auspicious location was chosen.
“For our story and our fictional Arconia, I knew we needed a home that carried enough history and elegance to hold a world of mystery and intrigue—and one that could also serve as a fitting backdrop worthy of our legendary cast.”
Ultimately, The Belnord was chosen to fulfill all parameters required. It arguably became the show’s biggest star besides its lead cast comprised of Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short.
The Belnord features one of the largest private courtyards in New York City, that can be reached through two imposing archways. Over time, the building has become a familiar landmark in the city. Jump to 1980, the National Register of Historic Places also added its name to its long list of popular places.
The building got a major revamp by Robert A.M. Stern when its residences were purchased by the HFZ Capital Group in 2015. 95 of its apartments were renovated, and its condos have been sold for over $1.35 billion in total since then.
