Blue Beetle DC Universe: Is It Part of the New DCU?

With Blue Beetle only a few weeks away from its theatrical release, curiosity is high about the movie’s status in the DC Universe. Is the upcoming film part of the so-called DC Extended Universe, or is it the first DCU installment? Also, is the titular hero joining Batman, Superman, and the other DC heroes? Here’s what you need to know.

Is Blue Beetle part of the new DCU or DCEU?

Blue Beetle is a standalone story whose status seems to be pointing toward the DCU.

There is some uncertainty regarding the status of the Angel Manuel Soto-directed movie. The project was announced in 2018, way before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the future of the DC heroes. While the Gunn-led era will kick off with Superman: Legacy, the director has stated on previous occasions that Blue Beetle can be considered the first DCU character. Director Soto also seems to be pretty confident Jaime Reyes will have his place in the new DC era. Much will depend on the movie’s success at the box office and how well fans will respond to Blue Beetle.

Is Blue Beetle in the same universe as Batman, Superman, and Flash?

Blue Beetle is part of a universe where superheroes exist.

In the trailer, someone calls Batman a “fascist,” which implies people are aware the Dark Knight exists, at least. That said, people involved in the Blue Beetle production haven’t been too explicit about whether the titular hero will interact with other DC heroes. Also, Soto stated that the events in his 2023 film aren’t tied with those in other DC movies. The superhero portrayed by Xolo Maridueña seems to be in a sort of limbo currently. More answers will come once the film is officially released on August 18.
