Star Wars Outlaws Timeline: When Does the New Game Take Place?

After much anticipation, the first trailer of Star Wars Outlaws has finally been unveiled. The upcoming Ubisoft open-world video game promises to allow fans to explore the vast Star Wars galaxy and the Outer Rim’s galactic underworld. But where does Star Wars Outlaws take place in the larger Star Wars timeline? And is the story canon or part of the larger Star Wars Legends?

Where Does Star Wars Outlaws Fit in the Canon Timeline?

The events of Star Wars Outlaws occur between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

The freshly released trailer features a very elegant nod to one of the most beloved characters in the original Star Wars trilogy, showing Han Solo frozen in carbonite. Shortly after, fans see an Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer popping up a few seconds into the trailer. Of course, the gigantic spaceship is full of stormtroopers. As the fans get to know Kay Vess, it seems that the protagonist will cross paths with a Rancor somewhere in her adventures.

Many years have passed since the original Star Wars trilogy release, and the new video game carries a very strong The Mandalorian vibe with it. While the TV series is arguably the hottest Star Wars project at the moment, Din Djarin’s story takes place way after the events of the original trilogy. A cameo from the most popular Mandalorian might be unlikely, yet never say never in the entertainment world.

Is Star Wars Outlaws canon?

As far as we know, Star Wars Outlaws is canon.

While Lucasfilm and Ubisoft haven’t yet stated Star Wars Outlaws’ canonicity, there is no valuable point that hints the upcoming video game isn’t canon. Games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel Jedi: Survivor are part of the canon, and Star Wars Outlaws seems to be going down that route.
