PlayStation Plus May 2021 Free Games Revealed

Sony has revealed which three games PlayStation Plus subscribers can add to their collections this coming May. The PlayStation 5 selection is Wreckfest, a demolition derby/racing game from the fine folks at Bugbear Entertainment and THQ Nordic. On the PlayStation 4 front, players can leap into action on EA’s Battlefield V or try to survive in Stranded Deep.

Wreckfest arrives for the first time on PlayStation 5 this May, but it has made more than a few laps around the track on other platforms. Premiering on Steam in Early Access as Next Car Game in 2014, the game has made its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as a full release on PC under its new name. It has continued to gain momentum over the years thanks to constant updates, and an arcade feel that many other racing franchises have rejected in modern times. The game will be a current-gen console exclusive for now, although it’s likely that it will eventually launch on Xbox Series X|S as an optimized title.

Stranded Deep also started life in Early Access on PC before migrating to consoles, and it’s still in active development six years after its first release. Gameplay centers on role-playing as a version of Tom Hanks in Castaway, only with more inventive weapons and the ability to fight off undersea life. Anyone who wants to stab a shark underwater will find a few hours of fun in this still unfinished game.

The likely headliner of this month’s selections for many will be the PlayStation 4 version of Battlefield V. Taking the famous series back to World War II, this shooter found stuff competition at the time of its release from its regular rival Call of Duty and many emerging battle royale titles. While the game does have its own massively multiplayer mode, anyone joining the battle in 2021 should expect stiff competition from series veterans.

All three selections will launch on the service on Monday, May 3. Players have until then to grab April’s games, which include Days Gone, Zombie Army 4: Dead War, and brand new PS5 release Oddworld: Soulstorm.
