Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion Trailer Offers Glimpse Into the Teen Clothing Brand’s Toxic Culture

HBO will soon release a documentary film titled Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion, which will showcase the controversies surrounding the teen fashion brand, Brandy Hellville. Directed by Eva Orner this project premiered at SXSW 2024.

Silvio Marsan and his son Stefan founded Brandy Melville in the 1980s in Italy. Over the years, they grew by leaps and bounds, and by the time the 2000s arrived, its name was on the tongues of young girls all across the planet. Reports suggest that the brand made use of elaborate social media campaigns that took their popularity and ‘must have’ status to the next level. Currently, they have almost 100 stores, spread across 80 cities in 15 countries.

Interestingly, their success story has a dark side. Since they promoted a “one-size-fits-most” policy, they were accused of a “lack of size inclusivity”. According to High School Insider, on the surface, their tagline gave the impression that they made clothing that could adapt to any human body, irrespective of their size. However, this was simply not the case.

Brandy Hellville’s “one-size-fits-most” moto made clothes for those individuals who they believed had the perfect body type. This made young girls desperate to fit in and as a result, several issues came under the limelight. Their audience felt insecure about their physiques and would go to great lengths to be a “Brandy girl.” These included things such as extreme diets, overwhelming exercise routines, skipping meals, eating disorders, and also deadly mental health disorders. Furthermore, Brandy Hellville was accused of racism, antisemitism, and sexual misconduct.
