DC Just Gave Supergirl a Power Upgrade Even Superman Would Want

Supergirl just got a weapon that makes Kryptonite look like a party trick. DC’s latest issue introduces an ancient Kryptonian artifact that flips everything fans know about Superman’s greatest weakness on its head.

Supergirl’s Yellow Ring restores the solar energy that fuels Kryptonian powers

Sophie Campbell’s Supergirl #15 introduces a powerful new artifact to DC’s Kryptonian mythology. The Yellow Ring of Nor-Kann functions as the direct opposite of Kryptonite by restoring Kryptonian powers instead of stripping them away. Kandorian scientist Nor-Kann engineered the ring to store and synthesize highly concentrated yellow solar radiation.

The ring serves a specific purpose within the Bottle City of Kandor. Under normal circumstances, Kryptonians inside Kandor lose their godlike capabilities entirely. The city’s artificial environment and lack of proper solar exposure prevent them from accessing their abilities. However, a Kryptonian wearing the Yellow Ring of Nor-Kann can channel yellow sun energy directly into themselves. This localized reservoir of solar radiation awakens the full array of Kryptonian abilities in its wearer.

Kara Zor-El recovers the ring after stopping Zora Vi-Lar, also known as Black Flame. She defeats Zora by overloading her with sunlight outside of Kandor. Rather than keeping the ring, Supergirl passes it on to Lesla-Lar. She also assembles a new superhero team called “Super Force” and appoints Lesla-Lar as Kandor’s permanent protector. Lesla-Lar then takes the official superhero name Luminary and wears a yellow-and-blue costume variation.

The ring’s function parallels Platinum Kryptonite, which can permanently grant Kryptonian abilities to non-powered humans. Meanwhile, this Silver Age relic specifically empowers Kryptonians who lack access to yellow solar radiation. Its introduction expands DC’s already vast Kryptonian technology beyond simple Kryptonite variants.

Krypton’s technological legacy extends far beyond minerals that weaken or empower its survivors. Sunstone Crystals serve as programmable crystalline computers capable of constructing architecture and preserving records. The Phantom Zone Projector functions as an extradimensional prison for criminals.

Much of this advanced technology survived because it left Krypton aboard exploration vessels before the planet’s destruction. Each rediscovered artifact offers another glimpse into DC’s most technologically advanced civilization.
