Guardians Vol. 2 Passing $800M Today, Pirates 5 Adds $39.4M Tuesday

With $342.7 million domestically and $454.7 million internationally for a global total of $797.4 million through May 30, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is expected to surpass $800 million in global box office today, becoming Marvel Studios’ fifth release to reach this milestone. Continuing Marvel’s unbroken streak of 15 #1 debuts, the film opened domestically May 5 with $146.5 million, the #2 debut of the year and the #17 debut ever. It’s the #2 movie of the year domestically and the #3 movie of the year internationally and globally. Last weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 surpassed the total domestic ($333.2M), international ($440.2M), and worldwide grosses ($773.3M) of its 2014 predecessor, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was made for $200 million and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Kurt Russell.

Disney‘s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales posted an estimated $39.4 million globally yesterday and saw China cross the $100 million mark. The fifth installment grossed $6.8 million domestically and $32.6 million internationally on Tuesday. That means the North American total is sitting at $85.3 million, international total at $280.4 million, and worldwide total at $365.7 million.

Directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was made for $230 million and stars Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kevin R. McNally, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani, Stephen Graham, David Wenham and Geoffrey Rush.
