Ciaran Hinds Teases Steppenwolf in Justice League

Though he’s yet to pop up in the marketing materials for the upcoming Justice League, the villainous Steppenwolf made his debut in a deleted scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that was released online just days after the film had been in theaters. It was later reported that Game of Thrones star Ciaran Hinds would take on the role for the character in Justice League, and in a new interview with Independent UK, he briefly teased the villain’s goal, saying:

“He’s old, tired, still trying to get out of his own enslavement to Darkseid, [but] he has to keep on this line to try and take over worlds.”

This is an interesting departure from the character’s roots in comics where he worked as a leader in Darkseid’s army of Apokolips, serving as his right hand man. Making Steppenwolf a former member of Darkseid’s many slaves certainly changes up the character’s dynamic. Hinds went on to confirm that, as previously reported, the character will be motion captured for the final film.

Hinds is known to many as Mance Rayder on HBO‘s Game of Thrones, while his many big-screen roles include hits like Munich and Road to Perdition. He also lent his voice to Disney‘s Frozen and played Aberforth Dumbledore (brother to Albus) in the final Harry Potter film.

Justice League also stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Directed by Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeMan of Steel), the screenplay is by Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio. The producers are Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. The executive producers are Jim Rowe, Wesley Coller, Curt Kanemoto, Chris Terrio and Ben Affleck.

Justice League will open in theaters on November 10, 2017.
