Box Office: Oculus Opens in Third Place with $12 Million

Despite fantastic and mostly positive reviews including a 9/10 review from Shock’s own Ryan Turek, the movie only opened with a modest $12 million or $4,500 per location, which was enough for it to open in third place at the box office.

The innovative take on the haunted mirror genre stars Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as a sister and brother who are haunted by horrifying and violent events from their childhood, which they blame on an antique mirror owned by their father, who murdered their mother (played by Katee Sackhoff). Ten years later, the siblings return to the scene of the crime to face whatever evil lurks inside the mirror.

Fortunately, there’s no other horror movies in theaters until the April 25 release of Hammer Films’ The Guilty Ones so maybe word-of-mouth will help Oculus find its audience before it leaves theaters.
