The Spierig Bros. Talk Daybreakers, TV & Graphic Novel

And their forthcoming Dark Crystal

With the DVD and Blu-Ray release of Daybreakers this week (worth a revisit, especially the Blu’s feature-length documentary), Shock Till You Drop caught up to directors Michael and Peter Spierig. It was our third time talking with the Australian brothers about their bloodsucker flick with Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, so we pressed them for details about the future of the Daybreakers universe.

“There’s definitely a chance. Plenty of material to explore. We wrote some stuff for a graphic novel,” says Peter. “The one thing that excites me is perhaps doing television. To be able to expand a world like this, you get more of an opportunity to explore it and understand it in television than you do in film most of the time. The nature of the series, 20 or 24 episodes. It could be exciting.” But who could fill Dafoe’s shoes? Peter laughs, “Well, if it was television, we’d explore different characters. No one can replace Willem.”

There are no immediate plans to get their Daybreakers graphic novel out there. They’re currently gauging the interest from film fans and if there’s a desire for it, then they’ll seek out a publisher.

The fellas are well-versed in the vampire lore, just don’t bring up Twilight. They cite Near Dark, The Lost Boys, Roman Polanski’s Fearless Vampire Killers and Fright Night among their favorites. Regarding the latter, I tell them Colin Farrell is cast as Jerry Dandrige in the remake. “Oh, okay, hadn’t heard that one,” laughs Michael. “Who’s Roddy McDowell?”

I also spoke to them about their upcoming Power of the Dark Crystal project, read all about that right here.
