Today’s MPAA ratings bulletin begins with Demolition from director Jean Marc-Valleé (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) as rumors surfaced only recently it may follow in the footsteps of his last two films and play the Toronto Film Festival, only this time perhaps as the fest’s opener.
The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts and follows a young investment banker (Gyllenhaal) struggling to understand his emotional disconnect following the tragic death of his wife in an auto accident. As he tears apart his life in a distraught effort to see where he went wrong, he becomes obsessed with destruction and develops a unique relationship with a single mother (Watts) who rescues him. The pic is still without a release date.
Next is the Maggie Smith dramedy The Lady in the Van in which Smith plays a transient woman living in her car that’s parked in man’s driveway. They form a bond. It’ll likely be cute and based on its PG-13 rating it will definitely contain at least one, “brief unsettling image”. Whatever could it be?
The Adam Sandler video games kill us comedy Pixels scores an expected PG-13 rating, as did Jonathan Demme‘s Ricki And The Flash starring Meryl Streep.
Sinister 2 gets a hard R rating while one of my more anticipated films of this summer, The Stanford Prison Experiment, also scores an R.
Finally, it looks like The Weinstein Co. is going to release Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s two-year-old The Young & Prodigious T.S. Spivet some time this year, though to my knowledge no date has yet been announced.
