Oscar Predictions Update: Seven Categories Updated After ‘Foxcatcher’ Move

After updating all the major Oscar categories last week following the Toronto, Venice and Telluride film festivals, this week’s updates come as a result of a couple of contenders bowing out of the race and any minute now we could see another departure.

Early in the week the Weinstein Co. moved the Nicole Kidman starrer Grace of Monaco to 2014 and just last night Sony Classics announced Bennett Miller‘s Foxcatcher would also bow out of this year’s Oscar race and find a slot on the 2014 slate. Time will only tell if The Wolf of Wall Street will quickly follow suit as Paramount has yet to issue an official response to the rumors going around regarding its move.

Beyond the absence of two major contenders I’ve also bumped up the prospects of Paul GreengrassCaptain Phillips starring Tom Hanks after hearing nothing but good things about the upcoming thriller. I won’t be seeing the film until October 3 when I can finally come to my own conclusions, but for now I’m taking the word of others and moving it on up.

All said, I have updated seven categories in this year’s race, some changes more dramatic than others and along with all the categories Foxcatcher and Grace of Monaco are associated with, I’ve also updated the Best Animated Feature category. I hadn’t yet added Hayao Miyazaki‘s The Wind Rises to the list and while I’ve long said I felt Frozen would win the category the latest trailer has me second guessing that decision big time.

Once there you will see a navigation in the right hand column directing you to additional categories, or you can click here and see all my current nomination predictions on one page.
