Fox Searchlight has thrown an unexpected wrinkle into the Oscar race, which will certainly have people scrambling to add Anthony Hopkins to their Best Actor predictions as they have slotted Sacha Gervasi‘s Hitchcock for a November 23 limited, platform release.
The film, based on Stephen Rebello’s 1998 non-fiction book “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho” tracks how Hitchcock (Hopkins), at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a ‘lowly’ horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. The film will center on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, James D’Arcy, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow and Kurtwood Smith co-star.
Mirren will certainly be added to the Oscar mix as well and who knows may find their way into the supporting categories. You can also check out the first poster for the film at the bottom of this post.
In other news, Warner Bros. has finally settled on a release date for Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby, which was originally set to hit theaters on Christmas Day, but will now lead off Summer 2013 with a May 10, 2013 release.
The film follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
