John Hillcoat‘s Lawless starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke will play for press tomorrow morning here at the Cannes Film Festival as one of two hotly anticipated Weinstein Co. releases playing the fest this year — the other being Killing them Softly. With the film’s buzz sure to grow in the next 24 hours, Weinstein has gotten into some early promotional positions with six new character posters (via Fandango and The Huffington Post) as well as an interview with Chastain over at USA Today where her revelation that she gets naked in the film is already causing advanced buzz.
Chastain is said to have a “very prominent nude scene” of which she tells USA Today, “It’s going to be interesting to see this film in a huge theater… Because I am, you know, more exposed.”
As for sitting inside the Cannes Festival Grand Lumiere the night of the premiere with thousands of audience members in attendance she says, “It will be totally embarrassing,” but as for the scene itself she is quite confident adding, “I am a woman very much in control in that scene. I am not being objectified. So I was excited to shoot it. It puts the woman in a very powerful position.”
Once titled The Wettest County in the World based on the book by Matt Bondurant, writing about his grandfather and two granduncles, Lawless follows the story of the rural hard-men that created the big city gangsters. Brazen and fearless, these young rebel brothers helped build the American Dream in this exuberant tale of what was to become crime’s first major gold rush. The youngest brother, Jack (LaBeouf), fancies himself the next Al Capone; he dreams of sharp suits, guns, girls and fast cars, no matter the cost.
