I think I’m the last movie-based website on the Internet to post the following poster (via the film’s Facebook page) for the Cannes Film Festival conversation starter Sleeping Beauty, but so be it. It doesn’t exactly do all that much for me. It could possibly continue the conversation thread I unsuccessfully tried to start about two weeks ago, but otherwise it’s just more of the same.
Over at Hollywood Elsewhere, Jeff Wells wonders why the Photoshopped out her breast (I’m not sure they did) and over at Slash Film, Russ Fischer says this is just one more example of how the film “continues to look like the arthouse alternate-reality Sucker Punch.”
The one reaction, though, that I actually found interesting comes from Glenn Dunks over at Stale Popcorn where he writes:
Either way, this piece of design is just gorgeous and flawless. Emily Browning looking stunning, surrounded by satin and delicate embroidery. It’s a design of pure baiting eroticism that we rarely see and I love the guts it has to just put itself out there. There’s no hiding the fact that this film is about sex now, is there?
When I asked people whether there was a discernible difference between Sleeping Beauty and Sucker Punch, Dunks may have pegged it. Sucker Punch was a film sold on the idea of scantily clad girls blowing shit up while Sleeping Beauty comes right out and says it’s about, a young girl (Emily Browning) who accepts a role as a “Sleeping Beauty” which is to say she’s a prostitute who allows herself to be drugged and while she sleeps men do things to her she can’t remember when she wakes up. In this case, if this is the “arthouse alternate-reality Sucker Punch” as Russ says, then I guess that means staying true to your intentions.
This will certainly be a film on my schedule while at Cannes next month. Here’s the poster.
