Rue McClanahan Dies at the Age of 76

“The Golden Girls” are down to just one surviving member, as Betty White is the last of the comedy quartet that was loved by so many with today’s unfortunate passing of Rue McClanahan at the age of 76.

People carries the quote from her manager, Barbara Lawrence, saying, “She passed away at 1 a.m. this morning. She had a massive stroke.”

McClanahan starred in 180 episodes of the hit show “The Golden Girls” from 1985-1992 and is now the third of the group to pass away in recent years. Beatrice Arthur, died from cancer in April of last year and Estelle Getty died in 2008. 88-year-old Betty White is still working hard. After recently hosting an episode of “Saturday Night Live” she also starred opposite Sandra Bullock in The Proposal in 2009 and plays Grandma Bunny in You Again this September opposite Kristen Bell.

McClanahan’s feature film roles included 1997’s Starship Troopers and 2003’s The Fighting Temptations, but of course she will always be remembered as Blanche Devereaux, a role that earned her an Emmy Award and three Golden Globe nominations.
