Tom Rhys Harries shared the playful comment while discussing his preparation for playing Matt Hagen, the psychologically complex villain at the center of Clayface. During an interview, he was asked whether he had bounced ideas off Robert Pattinson or anyone else, considering the character’s dark emotional journey. Smiling, Harries answered simply, “I got him on speed dial on my phone,” drawing laughs before moving on.
The exchange arrives as DC Studios ramps up promotion for Clayface, releasing the movie’s first official trailer ahead of San Diego Comic-Con. Directed by James Watkins, the film is scheduled to reach theaters on October 23 through Warner Bros.
The story reimagines classic Batman foe Matt Hagen as an aspiring actor whose life spirals after a horrific accident. Following a facial disfigurement, he is attacked in a hospital and injected with mysterious chemicals that transform him into the shape-shifting Clayface. The film traces his fall from rising Hollywood talent to a revenge-driven monster while exploring identity, humanity, destructive love and the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition.
The cast also features Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan. The screenplay comes from Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, while Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran serve as producers.
Fans were quick to dissect both Harries’ interview and the newly released footage. Many felt the trailer’s visual style looked as though it belonged in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, despite Clayface being part of the DC Universe slate.
Others praised Harries himself, with one fan writing, “I love this guy,” while sharing another clip in which the actor joked that he doesn’t need to stay connected to other DC heroes because he’s Clayface and can literally become “other DC characters.”
