New Mandalorian Special Gives Star Wars Fans a New Hope After Grogu Movie

The Mandalorian and Grogu was not the box office success Disney hoped for. A new special was recently announced that looks to be a new hope for the franchise, though.

Recently, Disney confirmed that a new Lego Star Wars special based on The Mandalorian was in the works. The new special will premiere on Disney+ on September 2, 2026, and looks like it will focus largely on Grogu and The Mandalorian’s adventures together.

The latest news was revealed immediately after The Mandalorian and Grogu’s digital and physical debut announcement. However, the news is also Disney taking a chance on recapturing the love of the original series through a new lens that fans already love.

The newest Mandalorian special has a chance to reignite love for it

It’s no surprise that the world of Star Wars is in a rocky place. Back in the day, a new Star Wars movie meant instant success at the box office. Even films that were largely criticized like 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story were almost guaranteed to cross $200 million domestically. However, The Mandalorian and Grogu marks a new low for the franchise.

The movie’s domestic return became a new low for Star Wars, and is a shocking return for the movie, which was coming off the back of a wildly popular Disney+ show starring a huge name in Pedro Pascal. However, the lukewarm reaction to the movie both critically and commercially shows that Star Wars has fallen a bit since its heyday. The franchise remains incredibly popular, but doesn’t seem to draw the command of new audience members like it used to.

With that in mind, it makes some sense as to why Disney is leaning into the world of Lego. The iconic building block company has always been beloved, and its projects in the world of animated shows and games have equally been received highly. Lego Star Wars, specifically, has been something fans have always loved, making this a no-brainer.

For Disney, not only will the project allow them to get another show about The Mandalorian and Grogu out, but it’ll also allow them to try their hand at revitalizing the characters. Introducing them into a more kid-friendly project like a Lego series gets their popularity back up, and builds up some much-needed goodwill after yet another disappointing outing at the box office.
