Producer Greg Shapiro gave an exciting update on Harold & Kumar 4, teasing the return of its iconic cast.
The long-awaited fourth installment will be written and directed by Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. They have been part of the franchise’s creative team since the first movie, with Hurwitz and Schlossberg also directing 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo.
Confirmed Harold & Kumar 4 cast
Shapiro has officially confirmed that franchise leads John Cho and Kal Penn have signed on to reprise their fan-favorite roles as Harold Lee and Kumar Patel in Harold & Kumar 4. They were last seen together at the end of 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, where they managed to repair their friendship after years of estrangement. So far, they’re the only returning cast members confirmed for the project. Further details about the project’s plot and new characters are still under wraps.
Besides confirming Cho and Penn’s involvement, Shapiro also shared that the creative team is still working on the new sequel’s screenplay. “We’re working on the screenplay right now for the next Harold and Kumar movie, but everybody’s back – the actors, the writers – the writers are directing,” Shapiro said. “Hopefully, we’ll be shooting it soon. It’s just like any movie where it all has to come together in the right way.”
Unconfirmed Harold & Kumar 4 cast
Since development on Harold & Kumar 4 is still moving forward, Lionsgate and the creative team still have the chance to find a way to bring back key characters from the previous movies. The most likely cast return would probably be Neil Patrick Harris, who has played a fictionalized version of himself throughout the franchise. Besides him, David Krumholtz, Eddie Kaye Thomas, and Paula Garcés’ returns in Harold & Kumar 4 are also likely, especially since they have all starred in the first three movies. Krumholtz and Thomas played the titular duo’s weed-smoking neighbors, while Garcés portrayed Harold’s love interest, Maria.
The Harold & Kumar movies have featured several notable guest stars, including Ryan Reynolds, Ed Helms, Malin Akerman, and Patton Oswalt. The most memorable one among them was Law & Order star Christopher Meloni’s consistent cameo appearances. He appeared in all three films but played a different character each time. It won’t be surprising if the creative team continues this tradition by enlisting Meloni again for another fun cameo.
