Fans waiting for an update on Harold & Kumar 4 just got good news. The upcoming fourth film has been anticipated for well over a decade now, and the latest update brings it closer to being a reality.
What is the update on Harold & Kumar 4?
Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Harold & Kumar producer Greg Shapiro offered a promising update on the upcoming film. Shapiro spoke about the legacy of the franchise and shared that the screenplay for the fourth film is currently being written.
“We’re working on the screenplay right now for the next ‘Harold & Kumar’ movie, but everybody’s back, the actors, the writers…” Shapiro said (via Variety). “…the writers are directing, and hopefully we should be shooting it soon, you know, they’re just … it’s like any movie, it all has to come together in the right way.”
Shapiro’s comments suggest that franchise leads John Cho, Kal Penn, and Neil Patrick Harris will reprise their roles. The fourth film was confirmed to be in development over a year ago and will be directed by creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. The duo is sharing writing duties with Josh Heald. The film was teased as returning to “R-rated, smoke-filled chaos” by the filmmakers. Most recently, Penn also expressed his desire to work on the film. At one point, Penn had stated that he wanted Snoop Dogg in the new film.
The three Harold & Kumar films have grossed more than $103 million worldwide. The first film was directed by Danny Leiner, and the final film was helmed by Todd Strauss-Schulson. Only the second film was directed by its writing duo. Of the three, the first film got the most positive reception.
In March, Hurwitz wrote on social media that he had “recently started working on the script.” The film’s plot details remain under wraps.
