John Oliver’s three-episode arc on General Hospital concluded on Monday with Laura Wright’s Carly Spencer slapping his character Z across the face.

The late-night host portrayed a high-ranking member of the soap’s shadowy World Securities Bureau. His character arrived in Port Charles by helicopter on July 2 and immediately shot an injured gunman. Z then clashed with Carly over her daughter Josslyn Jacks’ recruitment into the bureau.

Monday’s episode kicked off with a heated confrontation between Z and Carly about Josslyn’s injuries. Z attempted to reassure Carly by saying, “Jacks was injured, but she’ll pull through.” Carly pushed back, reminding Z that Josslyn was “emotionally vulnerable because her boyfriend was brutally murdered.” She accused the bureau of exploiting that vulnerability to conscript her daughter.

When Z offered to add Carly to a visitation list, she demanded her daughter’s full return instead. Z fired back, telling her, “Then let me put this in language that you will understand. That ain’t gonna happen.” Carly responded by slapping Z with all her might.

General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini revealed that Oliver had personally requested the moment. Valentini told TV Insider, “One of his requests was to be slapped, so he gets slapped by somebody in the show.” Z’s arc wrapped up with him offering Ryan Paevey’s Cassius Faison a deal to join his operation.

Wright shared her admiration for Oliver’s dedication to the role. She told Variety she was “so impressed with the writing that honored what he does well while also staying true to what we do.” Oliver first campaigned for a soap role during a March episode of Last Week Tonight. He will next guest star on Days of Our Lives for three episodes in August.
