Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s marketing has taken an unexpected turn with Tom Holland meeting a living legend. The film will be Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man adventure set in the MCU.

The official Spider-Man social media accounts have released a new video where Tom Holland’s Spider-Man meets Lionel Messi and takes him on a swing through New York City. The video shows Peter Parker speaking to someone on the phone in a café. The door opens, and Messi walks in, leaving Holland’s Peter Parker awestruck.
In typical Peter Parker fashion, Holland fumbles through his introduction to Messi, asking what he’s doing at the cafe. Messi says that he’s using the Spidey tracker app to find Spider-Man. Parker quickly suits up off-screen, introducing himself to Messi. The wall crawler asks if he’s good with heights, to which Messi replies yes. The next moment sees Spider-Man taking Messi on a swing through New York City’s skyline, recreating the Amazing Fantasy #15 comic book cover.
The footage doesn’t end by advertising anything directly related to soccer. However, the video’s timing is no coincidence, as the 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently underway. Messi is representing Argentina at the tournament. At the time of writing, Messi is the top scorer of the tournament, scoring six goals across three matches.
This year’s FIFA World Cup will end on July 19, 2026, which is almost two weeks before Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in theaters. Still, it seems Sony has partnered with Messi to promote the upcoming film to the widest audience possible. The film’s marketing has already broken several notable records.
The fourth MCU Spider-Man film will follow Peter Parker as his DNA undergoes mutation, granting him new abilities. Spider-Man will cross paths with The Punisher, the Hulk, and The Hand in the new adventure, before potentially facing off against Jean Grey.
