Netflix Loses ‘Quality’ Battle to Apple TV & 2 Others, Says Study

A recent study shows that Apple TV has surpassed Netflix in terms of content quality. Rather than a typical battle of viewership numbers among streaming services, this result is determined using simple yet sophisticated quality metrics.

Netflix ranks fourth in latest streaming quality index

MoffettNathanson, a leading independent equity research publisher, recently introduced the MoffettNathanson Streaming Quality Index. It uses five metrics to rank streaming services by “quality” rather than just subscriber count or viewership. These metrics are:

  • Time of the day when subscribers watch content
  • Overall demand for content
  • Different franchises and their depth
  • The critical acclaim that the content has received
  • Availability of live sports and other events

Based on these factors, MoffettNathanson has found that Apple TV surpasses Netflix in content quality, though not by much. Apple TV has a score of 2.04, while Netflix has 1.95 (via 9to5mac).

Notably, Netflix has an expansive library featuring titles from across the globe, including originals like The Crown, House of Cards, Stranger Things, The Queen’s Gambit, and Adolescence.

Meanwhile, Apple TV has a comparatively smaller library, but boasts a higher success rate. It offers its subscribers access to some of the most critically acclaimed shows of recent times. That includes shows such as Severance, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Slow Horses, Silo, The Studio, Shrinking, and Black Bird.

On the other hand, Disney has outperformed every other streaming platform by a significant margin. It has scored 2.98, seemingly due to its several highly successful franchises, such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar’s Toy Story.

It was followed by HBO Max, which has a score of 2.07. Since it is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, iconic IPs that include DC Comics, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Dune are primarily available on HBO Max.

Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, and Paramount+ ranked next. They scored 1.33, 1.32, and 1.29, respectively.
