Avengers: Secret Wars’ Status Could Be Bad News

Marvel’s biggest upcoming movie may be facing a tighter schedule than expected. An update by Joe Russo for Avengers: Secret Wars might be bad news for fans. While the movie remains on track for its planned release, the latest comments have sparked questions about whether Marvel is cutting things too close on one of its most ambitious projects.

Avengers: Secret Wars is still in pre-production

A recent update from director Joe Russo revealed that Avengers: Secret Wars has not entered production yet. Speaking at Deadline’s Live Festival Studio, Russo explained that the team is still busy finishing work on Avengers: Doomsday while simultaneously preparing for Secret Wars. “We are doing some work still on Doomsday and will be until probably they rip it out of our hands in November… We’re in the middle of what we would call pre-production on Secret Wars.”

That comment confirms the movie is moving ahead behind the scenes, but cameras have not started rolling. Pre-production covers everything that happens before filming, including script development, concept art, casting, costume work, location scouting, stunt preparation, set construction, and extensive visual-effects planning.

For a film on the scale of Secret Wars, that process is enormous. Marvel has to coordinate a massive cast, multiple worlds, complex action sequences, and some of the biggest visual-effects work the studio has ever attempted.

The update has led some fans to wonder whether Marvel is operating on a very tight timeline. Secret Wars is currently scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Since the movie is expected to be heavily dependent on CGI and post-production work, every month of filming and effects production matters.

There is one possible explanation. The Russo brothers previously filmed portions of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame close together. Some material for Secret Wars could potentially be captured during work on Doomsday, though Marvel has not confirmed that approach this time.

Even with filming yet to begin, anticipation remains sky-high. Marvel has already confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Victor Von Doom, while characters connected to Fantastic Four are expected to play major roles in the story.
