Ethan Hawke’s FX series The Lowdown has added a 79-year-old Oscar-winning actor to its Season 2 cast. The performer joins Hawke and newly announced co-star Betty Gilpin, though producers have not revealed details about the role.
Tommy Lee Jones added to the cast of The Lowdown Season 2
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tommy Lee Jones has joined the cast of FX’s The Lowdown for its upcoming second season.
Producers have not disclosed details about his role. Jones joins returning lead Ethan Hawke and newly cast actor Betty Gilpin in the upcoming season. Reservation Dogs showrunner Sterlin Harjo created The Lowdown. FX renewed the series for a second season in January. Production will begin in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the spring. FX Productions produces the show.
Season one follows citizen journalist Lee Raybon, played by Ethan Hawke, who calls himself a Tulsa “truthstorian.” Raybon investigates corruption linked to the powerful Washberg family. The family’s patriarch, played by Kyle MacLachlan, runs for governor. The investigation intensifies after the suspicious suicide of Dale Washberg.
The first season features an ensemble cast that includes Keith David, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Michael “Killer Mike” Render, Kaniehtiio Horn, Tracy Letts, Peter Dinklage and the late Graham Greene. The AFI Awards named the show one of the 10 most outstanding television programs of 2025.
Jones’ casting marks his return to scripted television. He last appeared on TV in HBO’s 2011 telefilm The Sunset Limited, based on the Cormac McCarthy play. Jones directed the project and starred opposite Samuel L. Jackson.
Earlier in his career, Jones appeared in television productions including One Life to Live, Barnaby Jones, Baretta and Charlie’s Angels. In 1983, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for portraying Gary Gilmore in The Executioner’s Song.
Jones also received an Emmy nomination in 1989 for his role in Lonesome Dove alongside Robert Duvall. His recent film credits include The Burial, Finestkind and Ad Astra. Jones receives representation from CAA, Viewpoint and Jacobson Russell Saltz.
