After the latest episode of Season 11, Chicago Med fans are curious to know where Dr. Daniel Charles is. Following his recent health developments, viewers are worried that he might be leaving Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. So, is Dr. Charles really leaving for good?
Here are the details on the character’s fate.
Why has Dr. Charles been missing and when will he return to Chicago Med?
Dr. Charles is going on a temporary break, though there is no confirmation on when he’ll return.
Charles, played by veteran actor Oliver Platt, is a beloved character on Chicago Med since the pilot. He has treated thousands of patients during his time at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. However, the intensity of the job has taken a toll on the doctor himself, which became evident quite recently.
The show started hinting at his retirement from the beginning of Season 11. For his 65th birthday, his friends surprised him with a gift while implying that it’s time to retire. But the doctor didn’t take the encouragement well.
During the midseason premiere, Dr. Charles treated a woman who attempted suicide while waiting to get a heart for her transplant. But given her suicidal tendencies, he made the difficult decision to revoke her eligibility to get a transplant. The decision lingered in his mind for a long time. Later, when he got into a disagreement with the transplant surgeon, he suffered a major panic attack.
However, things become clearer to him during the January 12 episode, when he accepts his own mental health struggle with depression and anxiety. He informs Sharon Goodwin that he’s thinking about taking a break for a few weeks. He admits that he’s been having trouble with his antidepressants and wants to look for other options. She supports his decision, asking to take as much time as he needs.
While that surely is a cause for concern, there has been no official announcement from the showrunners or Platt about leaving the show yet. During an interview in December 2025, the showrunner, Allen MacDonald, briefly spoke about where the character’s arc is heading.
“We’ve really been doing a slow burn on Dr. Charles’ arc,” he told TV Line. “He’s been having some issues with his antidepressants, and he’s been struggling a little bit with his moods and not feeling as physically well as he has in the past. Those issues will come to a head later in the season.”
When asked about the doctor’s retirement, MacDonald said, “It’s a possibility that [Dr. Charles] considers.”
