Morgan Freeman, one of the true veterans of the industry, recently sat down for an interview where he spoke out about Tilly Norwood, among other things. Tilly Norwood is the first artificial intelligence (AI) actress created in September by the production company Particle6 Group. The move has generated negative reactions from many other industry stars as well. Freeman seemed equally unenthusiastic.
Morgan Freeman reacts to AI Actor Tilly Norwood
Morgan Freeman, among his multiple acting credits, is known for his voice. His voice has now become a staple of AI reproduction, something the actor condemned in this interview, as well. With the topic of AI up and running, the conversation steered towards AI actor Tilly Norwood.
Tilly Norwood is an entirely synthetic person regarded as the first “AI actor.” Norwood has received significant backlash from Hollywood actors, and Morgan Freeman shared a similar sentiment. The actor said in his interview with The Guardian, “Nobody likes her because she’s not real and that takes the part of a real person, so it’s not going to work out very well in the movies or in television … The union’s job is to keep actors acting, so there’s going to be that conflict.”
Previously, actors like Emily Blunt also criticized the AI actor and expressed concern. She said on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, “Does it disappoint me? I don’t know how to quite answer it, other than to say how terrifying this is.” The actress reacted in shock when presented with Norwood’s image, saying, “No, are you serious? That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary.”
The idea of AI replacing humans has long been a concern explored in sci-fi films and novels. Now, it appears to be closer to reality than ever before.
Tilly Norwood remains a highly debated topic, with much of Hollywood opposing the concept.
Morgan Freeman, meanwhile, is set to appear in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the third installment in the franchise.
