While fans are already planning their next binge, the fate of Last Samurai Standing is still up in the air.
The high-budget Japanese action drama, which debuted on Netflix on November 13, 2025, has quickly garnered a massive fan base, with fans wondering if they’ll be lucky enough to get another season of the show.
Here is everything we know.
Is Last Samurai Standing canceled or renewed for Season 2?
Right now, Netflix hasn’t said a word about renewing or canceling Last Samurai Standing. The creators are keeping things under wraps, too, with no official update in sight.
Considering the show’s massive scale, grand historical sets, and high-octane fight scenes, the call for Season 2 will probably depend on how the first six episodes perform with Netflix’s global audience. In short, the numbers will decide the future.
Last Samurai Standing takes its cue from Ikusagami, a hit historical novel by Naoki Prize–winning author Shogo Imamura, with artwork by Katsumi Tatsuzawa. The story first ran as a manga in Morning, Kodansha’s seinen magazine, from December 2022 across four volumes. Thus, Netflix jumped on board to bring it to life in a live-action series.
Set during Japan’s Meiji era, Last Samurai Standing throws 292 samurai into a deadly survival game with a prize of ¥100 billion on the line. However, the show is not just about blood and blades, but the real battle is emotional, testing each warrior’s sense of honor, loyalty, and survival instinct.
Junichi Okada leads the cast as Shujiro Saga, while also pulling double duty as producer and action choreographer. He’s joined by a lineup of Japan’s top talent, including Riho Yoshioka, Yumia Fujisaki, Masahiro Higashide, Hiroshi Tamaki, Shôta Sometani, Takayuki Yamada, Wataru Ichinose, and many more (via Netflix Tudum).
Critically, the show mostly earned positive praise for its story, battle scenes, and stunning period visuals, and was even dubbed a mix of highly successful shows, Squid Game and Shogun.
With its massive production scale and global ambitions, Netflix is likely waiting to see how the show performs, both in terms of numbers and fan reactions, before deciding whether to bring it back for another round.
