Diane Keaton’s family confirmed that the Oscar-winning actress died of pneumonia on October 11 at the age of 79.

The statement, shared exclusively with People, expressed appreciation for the public’s support during their time of loss. “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement read.

Her family also highlighted Keaton’s lifelong dedication to animal welfare and support for the unhoused community. “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” they said. A representative previously asked for privacy, adding, “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”

A source told People that Keaton’s health “declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.” The insider added, “Her death was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.” The source also noted that “in her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private.”

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton gained fame through The Godfather films. She won an Academy Award for Annie Hall in 1977. Keaton adopted two children, Dexter and Duke, and chose to remain unmarried. Her career featured acclaimed roles in The First Wives Club, The Family Stone, and HBO’s The Young Pope, leaving a lasting mark on Hollywood.
