LaRue told Soap Opera Digest how she felt the exit signs “in January.” She shared how makers tried to rehabilitate her “character.” Suddenly, she had scenes where Sonny ended up saying, “We can’t be friends anymore,” after Natalia broke his trust by lying about her former husband. The actress realized that her character’s days were numbered as her relationship with Sonny was her “only lifeline.”
While the 58-year-old did not confirm the exact reason behind her exit, she suggested it was likely due to Natalia finding it tough to sway viewers. She stated how difficult it was to get viewers on Natalia’s side and accept her love angle with Sonny. “People just weren’t buying it, because they just hated my character so much. I was so vilified that no matter what [the writers] did, it just wasn’t a solid enough rehabilitation that they were gonna buy me with Sonny,” she continued.
La Rue further added, “And so when they finally let that idea go, I realized, ‘Okay, I’m probably not much longer for this world.’” Nevertheless, she is grateful for her time and experience with General Hospital.
