Jim Caviezel Gives Passion of the Christ 2 Update: ‘It Might Be 2 Films’

Reports from earlier this year suggest a second Passion of the Christ is in development. According to star Jim Caviezel, however, more may be in store for the iconic martyr.

What did Jim Caviezel say about Passion of the Christ 2?

During a recent appearance on The Shawn Ryan Show, Caviezel spoke about a sequel to Passion of the Christ, and said that he thinks it’ll be split into multiple films. Caviezel has spoken with Mel Gibson — who directed the original film — and thinks that it “might be two films,” or even three.

“I asked him [Gibson] would you be ready to go in January, he said ‘yeah, maybe.’ I said ‘how about the end of fall,’ he said ‘yeah, maybe.’ So who knows […] it might be two films, maybe three, but I think it’s two.”

The sequel, titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, was reported to start filming this spring, according to World of Reel. However, it seems like things might begin this fall instead. Caviezel is set to reprise his role as Jesus Christ from The Passion of the Christ.

The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004. Directed by Mel Gibson, the movie depicts the final days of Jesus Christ’s life and his crucifixion. The film made $612 million on a budget of $30 million. Critical reception was mixed, however, with critics being split on the brutal depiction of the crucifixion and alleged anti-Semitism.
