Catherine Called Birdy Trailer: Bella Ramsey Leads Medieval Dramedy

Amazon Studios has released the official trailer for Lena Dunham’s upcoming film adaptation of Catherine Called Birdy, based on Karen Cushman’s coming-of-age novel of the same name. The film is scheduled to make its debut in select theaters on September 23, followed by its streaming debut on October 7.

The Catherine Called Birdy trailer, which you can check out below, introduces a rebellious young lady who’s trying everything she can to stop her father’s plans of marrying her off to a wealthy man in hopes of saving their family from going broke.

Catherine Called Birdy is written and directed by Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham (Girls). The film stars Game of Thrones vet Bella Ramsey, Andrew Scott (Fleabag), Joe Alwyn (The Favourite), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917), Ralph Ineson (Harry Potter films), Billie Piper (Doctor Who), Isis Hainsworth (Metal Lords), Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), and Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone).

“Set in 1290 in the Medieval English village of Stonebridge, the film follows Lady Catherine (known as Birdy), who’s the youngest child of Lord Rollo and the Lady Aislinn,” reads the synopsis. “Her playground is Stonebridge Manor, a house that, like the family, has seen better days. Financially destitute and utterly greedy, Rollo sees his daughter as his path out of financial ruin by marrying her off to a wealthy man for money and land. But Birdy, like all the great teen heroines, is spirited, clever, and adventurous – and ready to put off any suitor that comes calling in increasingly ingenious ways. Her imagination, defiance and deep belief in her own right to independence put her on a collision course with her parents. When the most vile suitor of all arrives, they are presented with the ultimate test of love for their daughter.”
