MacGyver To End After Planned Season 5 Series Finale

According to Deadline, the CBS action drama MacGyver will conclude its five-season run with a series finale set to air Friday, April 30 in the show’s usual 8pm time slot.

The drama, a reimagining of the popular 1985 series, follows MacGyver, as played by Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class), an undercover government agent with a skillset in engineering. While the show was never an enormous hit, it still drew a respectable 5.85 million viewers even while shouldering what the trade calls “the thankless job” of opening CBS’ Friday lineup consisting of Hawaii Five-o/Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods.

“All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as Monica, the writers and the entire crew,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. We’re gratified we get to give this dedicated and loyal fan base the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters in the thoughtful manner this series deserves.”

The series stars Till along with Tristin Mays (The Vampire Diaries), Justin Hires (Rush Hour TV series), Meredith Eaton (Paranormal Activity 2), Levy Tran (Two Ways to Go West) and Henry Ian Cusick (The Passage). George Eads (This Is Us), who originally appeared in the first three seasons as a co-lead before departing the show is not expected to reprise his role in the series finale, which, per the report, has already wrapped shooting.

“Since coming on board to MacGyver last year, I have been amazed by the devotion and enthusiasm of this remarkable cast and crew, as well as the loyal fans,” said showrunner Monica Macer, who joined the series following the departure of series developer/executive producer/showrunner Peter Lenkov. “My gratitude goes out to Lucas, Tristin, Justin, Meredith, Levy and Ian, who put everything they have into our show, specifically for the fans. We can’t wait for them to see our spectacular final episodes and the adventures that still await for Mac and the team at the Phoenix.”
